Shopping for clothing can be stressful! Learn about one place where you can save time and money while shopping ethically. Read on to learn where and how this one site does all these things.
Online Thrift Shopping
There have been more online thrift shops popping up. I’m so thankful because as a busy mom of five, I don’t have the time to sift through things in an actual store week after week looking for the gems, nor do I have the money to buy clothes full price. Enter ThredUP! It helps me save time and money.
I have been using ThredUP on and off for a few years, but as family life has gotten busier, and needs have increased, I’ve been using it consistently for over a year now. I’ve come to love it more and more. When I look in my closet, about 75% of my items have come from ThredUP. As I lose baby weight, I can inexpensively replace most of my wardrobe. Each season my children need bigger clothes. Using ThredUP makes these transitions feasible by saving me so much money and time! And I love that it is an ethical way to shop and supports the environment. How can one online store do all that? Let’s talk about it.
ThredUP Saves You Time
In years past, I would head to my local thrift stores with a child or two every week or so. As I had more children, I’d take a Saturday and have my husband watch the kids. Those were sometimes sorry days. I’d have a list of things I was looking for, and come home empty handed.
I love the hunt of a good deal at the thrift store. I even like the sifting, but it takes SO much time! Shopping on ThredUP saves you time because with how many items they have, you’re bound to find what you need without going from store to store, week after week. Normal thrift stores are like mines, you have to dig for the gold. Finding just what you want is definitely possible, but also rare. Especially if you’re shopping for multiple people.
With their online site or app, you can shop whenever you want. You can shop on and off, here and there, and finish up when you’re able. You don’t have to be there during store hours. All online shopping has this beauty.
ThredUP Saves You Money
Now, I’ll be honest, ThredUP is not the cheapest way to thrift shop. For me, the amount of time (and sanity – if we’re being really honest!) I save is worth the bit of extra cost I spend. I try to shop sales and that helps too. Also, everything I buy is in like-new condition and good brands, so it makes it worth it to me to pay the extra. Sure, Goodwill has flat prices no matter the brand or condition, but it takes a lot of time to find the really good things.
But if you compare ThredUP’s prices to brand new? Yes, of course you will be saving a lot of money! To give you some examples, a dress starts at around $6.99, jeans at $5.99, and tops at $3.99. However, the nicer things are usually closer to $10-$20.. The nice thing is that they have a large range of prices depending on what you can afford. And as with most online shopping, you can shop from lowest priced to highest priced.
Shop Ethically and Help the Environment
When you shop second hand, you’re not supporting fast fashion that cranks out cheap, short-term clothing. Instead, you’re supporting companies that want to make a difference. ThredUP supports sustainability. On their About page they say, “At ThredUP, we believe in a sustainable fashion future. Thrifting is about more than just finding amazing deals on your favorite brands. It’s about shopping with intention, rejecting throwaway fashion culture, and standing for sustainability. The clothes we wear have the power to create change.”
I love that most of my ThredUP packages are in cardboard boxes and the clothes are neatly folded and wrapped in tissue paper. Not each item in a plastic bag like when you shop other places. I can reuse the fun tissue paper and recycle the box. It’s a small thing, but it feels good to be supporting a company that is trying to do right by the environment. Also, you’re buying clothes that otherwise may have ended up in the landfill – not because anything was wrong with them, but simply because they were no longer wanted.
Returns are Easy!
One downfall to online shopping is not actually seeing the item in person, being able to feel it, or try it on. Thankfully, ThredUP makes returning items so, so easy! They will email you a free return label, you package it up, and set it in or near your mailbox. Once they get your return, they give you credit to your account for you to find something different. You can get an actual refund, but you have to pay shipping. For me, I know I’m always going to be looking for something on ThredUP, so having the credit works. They do charge a $1.99 restocking fee per item, but if you have enough reward points, you can waive those fees. Read more about returns and all about the reward program here.
Just be aware there are a few things you can’t return such as accessories, bags, and final sale items.
A Couple Cons
While shopping with ThredUP definitely saves you time and money, it’s not perfect. One major bummer is that they don’t have men’s clothing. They have women’s and children’s clothing, as well as shoes, accessories, purses, and bags. With they way they’re growing, I hope they will make men’s clothes available soon!
Another con in that their search engine is not the best. When you type in something specific, not much comes up or even a message saying there are no items like that. I’ve learned to work around this by using their multiple filters available. I teach you how to do that here.
